Chile earthquake leaves thousands briefly without electricity

A 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck northern Chile on Friday, impacting infrastructure and leaving thousands temporarily without power. The tremor, which occurred at 1:15 p.m. local time, was centered near the coast of the Atacama Desert, one of the driest regions on Earth. Despite the force of the quake, authorities have reported no casualties.

Chile earthquake leaves thousands briefly without electricity

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that the earthquake originated at a depth of 76 kilometers, with its epicenter situated close to several small towns and mining operations common to the Atacama region. The depth of the quake, while considerable, still allowed for strong surface shaking across multiple communities, contributing to minor damage and widespread concern.

Minor infrastructure damage reported after powerful Chile quake

Initial assessments by local authorities indicated that while some infrastructure experienced light damage, there were no reports of severe destruction or injuries. Miguel Ortiz, deputy director of Chile’s national disaster response agency, Senapred, stated that the primary impact involved disruptions to the power grid. Approximately 23,000 residents were temporarily left without electricity as emergency crews worked to restore service throughout the affected areas.

The earthquake was widely felt across the Atacama Desert and neighboring regions, causing alarm among residents. However, Chile’s Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service announced that the earthquake’s characteristics did not meet the threshold for generating a tsunami, alleviating fears of a secondary disaster along the Pacific coastline.

Chile, located along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, is no stranger to seismic activity. The country experiences frequent earthquakes due to the subduction of the Nazca tectonic plate beneath the South American plate. Authorities routinely conduct emergency preparedness drills, and infrastructure is generally constructed to withstand significant seismic events.

Emergency services responded promptly, deploying assessment teams to inspect bridges, roadways, and public facilities for potential structural damage. Minor issues, such as cracked walls and fallen debris, were reported in some areas, but the overall stability of major infrastructure remained intact, according to preliminary reports from local officials.

Authorities monitor region for possible aftershocks

As power was gradually restored and normal activities resumed, authorities continued to monitor the situation for aftershocks, which are common following large seismic events. Residents were advised to remain alert and follow safety guidelines as the region stabilized in the aftermath of the quake.

This latest earthquake serves as a reminder of Chile’s vulnerability to seismic hazards and the importance of its robust disaster preparedness measures. Despite the scale of the tremor, the quick response and resilient infrastructure helped minimize the impact on the population and prevented what could have been a far more serious event. – By MENA Newswire News Desk.
